Mr. Kumar Bala

Kumar is an accomplished biotechnology industry professional with international expertise in technology IP in-licensing and all aspects of product and market development management. His 21 years combined experience in global marketing (strategic and tactical) and commercial product development for biomarker discovery includes 9 years in R&D as a bench scientist focused on structure-function characterization of insecticidal proteins related to crop protection.

Kumar recently spent 3+ years at Bio-Rad Laboratories as Global Marketing Manager for the protein analysis and proteomics product portfolio focusing on marketing and market development. His prior experience includes positions as Marketing Director for the antibody business segment at Millipore. and Global Marketing Manager at GE Healthcare managing their 2D-DIGE proteomics portfolio for biomarker discovery. Additionally, he was also the Commercial Liaison for GE’s Global Research Center.  He has held senior management positions as Market Development Manager for proteomics at Invitrogen and as Global Product Manager at Genomics Solutions.

His depth and expertise in proteomics and protein analysis includes successful commercial development and launches of instruments including robotic platforms, reagents, and software of value for biomarker and drug discovery. During this period, Kumar has built an extensive network of global contacts in pharma, biotech, and academic life sciences. He is well connected and respected with the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO), has contributed to its activities since inception including the Plasma Proteome Project, was Co-Chair for the HUPO-Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) and member of the Human Proteome Project working group.

His academic background includes an MBA with specialization in Global Marketing and Finance from Drake University, MS in Immunology and Microbiology from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, BS in Biological Sciences from Southern Illinois University, and a BS & MS in Biochemistry from Madras University, India. He is a successful graduate of the Marketing for Senior Executives Program at Harvard Business School, MA as well as trained at GE’s Management School at Crotonville, NY.

Kumar is well versed with industrial product development and global commercialization over the past 2 decades.
